In our Japanese bilingual Storytime and Cooking Adventure, we had the honor of welcoming Kaori, a talented musician and piano teacher, and her son, Zach, a thoughtful high school junior. Kaori and Zach has lived in West Roxbury for the past 16 years.
Both Kaori and Zach shared vulnerably about their experiences holding onto their Japanese identity while navigating life in a bicultural and biracial family. Their reflections on what it means to embrace both their Japanese heritage and their American upbringing were deeply moving, offering our audience a chance to hear firsthand how cultural identity shapes their lives, relationships, and perspectives.
Through their stories, we are reminded of the power of cultural heritage, the importance of understanding our roots, and the beauty of sharing those traditions with others.
Zach’s Perspective on His Japanese American Identity
Zach, a high school junior, shared his thoughts on the beauty of having a Japanese American identity and how it has shaped his worldview. He reflected on the ways in which his identity blends two distinct cultures, each with its own traditions, values, and history. He expressed:
"One of the things I love about my Japanese American identity is the way it brings together two distinctly different cultures from across the world. The blend of histories, cultures, values, and traditions is truly special. They have shaped who I am and have allowed me to see the world through a broader lens. This blend has also influenced how I think, fostering an open-minded approach to life. Growing up, I was lucky enough to take part in both cultures through the unique experience of celebrating a wide range of traditions. I’ve been fortunate enough to enjoy both American and Japanese celebrations, foods, and customs. In the end, I find joy in the overall diversity of my identity, which has helped me build connections between two different worlds. Without this, I wouldn’t have the identity I do today."
Zach’s words beautifully highlight the joy and growth that comes from embracing both cultures, and how these experiences have shaped the way he views the world and his place within it.
Kaori’s Reflections on Raising a Biracial Family
Kaori, Zach’s mother, shared her unique experience of raising a child in a culture different from the one she grew up in. She spoke about the challenges she faced as a mother balancing two cultures, as well as the joy of sharing their family’s biracial journey. She said:
"Raising Zach in this bicultural environment has been a privilege. It allows me to pass on traditions that are deeply important to me while also supporting Zach’s ability to embrace and understand both of his cultures. However, I’ve faced challenges in preserving Japanese culture and traditions while living in the U.S. When we moved to the U.S., I realized that unfamiliarity often breeds fear, which sometimes makes it difficult to preserve the traditions we cherish."
Kaori also reflected on the tension she feels between Japanese cultural values and those of American culture. She noted the difference in emphasis between Japanese values of harmony, respect, and consideration for others, and the American focus on individualism. Despite these differences, Kaori shared her pride in Zach’s ability to navigate this complexity, stating:
"Although I noticed some school teachers expressing a lack of understanding, I feel grateful that Zach is able to contribute to preserving his heritage and traditions. This way, he is helping to bridge the gap between these two cultures. And in doing so, I’m confident his harmonious nature will be valued in society, as respect and consideration for others is highly valued."
